So many women with curves come to me and have absolutely no idea how to dress their bodies.  They are often hiding behind shapeless garments that are doing nothing for them other than making them appear larger and shapeless.  My motto in styling is “accent what you got”! I can’t count how many times I pulled out a pair of Not Your Daughters “Skinny” Jeans for a curvy girl and heard “there is no way I am even trying those on!”  But guess what?  After a lot of coaxing I will get my way! Once she has those curve hugging jeans on,  the sour look has turned into a reluctant smile (as not wanting to admit they were wrong and I was right)!
So let’s talk about my choices above and why they work…
The fabulous orange/peach colored NYDJ are curve enhancing and create a longer, leaner line especially when paired with a wedge heel (I’ll talk about the shoes in a minute). Pieces that fit well and sit CLOSER to the body are ideal for plus sizes. Too much volume will add bulk.
The chambray blouse works in this instance as it is tied at the waist (this is a huge look for Spring! You will find every designer doing a tie waist shirt this season in some form or another).  instinctively a curvy girl would want to wear a loose oversized shirt with these jeans. But by tying this shirt at the waist you are creating a line of demarcation and defining the waistline, ultimately, once again accentuating curves!
The Nine West wedge heels in this nude/tan color are ideal…there is nothing better for a larger girl then a chunky wedge.  It’s proportional to her frame rather than a thin stiletto and once again due to its height and color creates a longer line.  If we would have chosen a bright shoe it would have broken up the line of her leg.
I chose the Stella & Dot necklace for 2 reasons. One, it’s a statement piece that will be sure to draw the eye up towards the face. I worked in the jewelry business for a while and was always told “if you want to look like you just lost 10 lbs. then wear a great shorter statement piece”.  Also, it’s a necklace that’s in proportion to the models stature.
So there you have it…there truly is an art and science behind dressing, I hope this helps.
